Application
Methane CH4 Gas is used
◇ as a fuel gas in flame photometers
◇ as a fuel gas for vehicles as a natural gas
◇ in the gas batteries used by the Apollo space missions.
◇ as a raw material for the production of methanol, synthetic ammonia, acetylene, carbon black, carbon disulphide, hydrocyanic acid, chloromethane, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform.
Process
Methane CH4 Gas is the principal constituent of natural gas (typically natural gas is 87% methane). It is therefore commonly produced by purifying natural gas.
Pure methane may also be obtained from the cracking of petroleum fractions.
