Cryogenic Liquid Tanks

Cryogenic Liquid Tanks

A Cryo tank is a vertical or horizontal double-layer vacuum-insulated gas storage tank for storing liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and other media.
The primary function is to fill and store liquid at low temperatures.
Liquefied gases, such as liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, are widely utilized for cryogenic applications.
Liquid nitrogen is the go-to choice in cryogenics and is legally available worldwide.
Cryostorage tanks include liquid oxygen tank, liquid nitrogen tank, liquid argon tank, Liquid Nitrous Oxide Tank (LNO), Liquid carbon dioxide Tank and LNG Tank.

What is a Cryogenic Liquid Tank?

A cryogenic liquid tank is a specialized storage vessel designed to hold gases in their liquid state at extremely low temperatures, typically below -150°C (-238°F).
Cryogenic liquids are usually gases that have been liquefied at temperatures of -150 °C or lower. Common examples include oxygen, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, and helium.
These cryogenic vessels are essential for safely storing cryogenic liquids, ensuring they remain in liquid form for efficient use in applications

The tanks are double-walled, with a stainless steel inner vessel holding the liquefied gas and a carbon steel outer vessel acting as an insulating layer.
The space between the inner and outer vessel is filled with a vacuum or a highly efficient insulating material, such as perlite or foam, to minimize heat transfer and prevent the escape of stored gases.

Applications of Cryo Tanks

Cryostorage tanks have widespread applications in various industries because they efficiently store large quantities of liquefied gases. Some notable applications include:

Industrial Gases:
The cryogenic vessels store and supply industrial gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, essential in manufacturing processes, metal fabrication, and pharmaceutical production.

Energy and Power:
Liquefied natural gas is stored in LNG tanks to facilitate transportation and use as a cleaner energy source. These tanks enable LNG’s safe storage and transportation, ensuring availability in regions where pipelines are not economically viable.

Aerospace and Defense:
Cryogenic storage tanks play a crucial role in the aerospace industry, where they are utilized to store propellants for rockets and spacecraft. The extremely low temperatures allow higher storage densities, enabling more extended missions and significant payloads.

Medical Applications:
Cryogenic storage tanks are used in medical facilities to store and transport cryopreserved biological materials, including stem cells, tissues, and organs, for research and transplantation purposes. These tanks provide a reliable environment for maintaining the integrity and viability of these critical materials.
