C2H4 Ethylene suppliers
Ethylene (C2H4) is a colourless, flammable hydrocarbon gas with a faint, sweet, and musky odour when pure.
As one of the most important industrial chemicals, it is central to manufacturing plastics, agrochemicals, and more.
DSW provides high-quality ethylene gas in various purities and concentrations tailored to meet worldwide diverse industrial and agricultural needs.
Physical and Chemical Properties

Einecs: | 200-815-3 | Molecular Weight: | 28.054
CAS: | 74-85-1 | Flammability range in air, [% volume]: | 2.7-36.0
Boiling Point: | at 1.013 bar [℃] | -103.68 | at 14.5 psi, [℉] | -154.60 |
Density: | at 1.013 bar,15℃, [kg/m³] | 1.194 | at 1 atm., 70℉, [lb/ft³] | 0.073 |
Ethylene is highly flammable and must be handled with appropriate safety measures. Its density and volatility make proper storage and transport crucial.
Production Process
Ethylene is typically produced through several methods, including:
- Cracking of Petroleum: A significant source of industrial-grade ethylene.
- Pyrolysis of Ethane: A process that breaks down hydrocarbons.
- Dehydration of Ethanol Vapors: Using dehydrating catalysts at 360–470°C.
These processes ensure a steady supply of ethylene for global industrial applications.
Ethylene Uses
Ethylene is the starting material for several industrial syntheses by ethylene suppliers.
It is employed as an intermediate in the chemical industry and for producing plastics.
Ethylene C2H4 Gas is employed for the production of:
acetaldehyde
acetic acid
chloroethane
chloroethene (vinyl chloride)
dichloroethane
1,1-dichloroethene (vinylidene chloride)
epoxyethane (ethylene oxide)
ethanediol (ethylene glycol)
ethanol
ethoxyethane
ethylbenzene
phenylethene (styrene)
polychloroethene (polyvinyl chloride)
polyethene
propanoic acid
tetraethyl lead
trichloroethane
The most crucial use of Ethylene C2H4 gas is for fruit ripening as a natural growth regulator; Ethylene C2H4 gas ripening fruit is harmless to the human body.
The second important use is as an intermediate in the chemical industry and production of plastics.
Applications of C2H4 Ethylene
Ethylene may be employed for welding and cutting but is not used for industrial purposes.
Ethylene supplied in cylinders is used to control the ripening of fruit, especially bananas. It is used at a concentration of a few ppm in the warehouse atmosphere.
Because of flammability considerations, using a mixture of ethene in nitrogen in this application is strongly recommended.
Ethylene has also been used in agriculture to promote crop growth; in this case, the gas is injected directly into the soil.
Ethylene is still used as an anaesthetic (in the US).
It is used as a refrigerant, especially in the petrochemical industry. It has the ASHRAE number R-1150.
