Industrial gas cylinders are available in three basic types: seamless steel, all-aluminium cylinders, and hoop-wrapped composite cylinders (known in Europe). Depending on their application, gas cylinders vary in shape, size, and weight.
Three major groups of compressed gases are stored in cylinders: liquefied, non-liquefied, and dissolved.
In each case, the pressure of the gas in the cylinder is commonly given in units of kilopascals (kPa) or pounds per square inch gauge (psig). Gauge pressure = Total gas pressure inside the cylinder – atmospheric pressure
